Tarry For The New Face Poem by Nyagaka Charles

Tarry For The New Face

Right from our wedding years ago,
It has been a long ride,
With undying hope we have looked on to this,
together.
Years of ups and downs,
As is usual in a marriage,
Thank God we managed to stay together,
And still our strength we gather.

Ooh sweetie,
You know how eager i'am?
In an eternity of patience,
With an everlasting patience we've waited
For the day of your labors,
When finally I'll b called 'Daddy',
And as a reward for my toil and labor,
We hold a new face in our hands!

Believe you me,
The whole country,
Even to the edge of the planet,
Everybody knows that you are in pains!
Surprise?
Yes, honey,
They listen to your screams n hopeful wails! .
Right from conception months ago,
All eyes have been on you!

You don't want to lose this, do you?
Not after fifty fruitless years!
Why do you want to disown this foetus?
Why do you want to abort?
Can't you wait for her to come dear?

Sure you can darling,
Why kill it before it awakes?
Tarry, sweetheart, tarry,
Let us see the face we have longed for,
The very face of our long hoped for baby,
The very face
Of a new Nation,
A new Kenya!
