That Night Poem by Rachel Brewer

That Night

I rounded the dark corner,
In the middle of the night.
What then befell my eyes,
Was a truly shocking sight.

Your body, twisted and broken,
Slumped down on the floor,
I couldn’t believe it was really you,
I had been with you moments before.

We were having drinks at the pub,
Another night on the town.
I wish I’d stayed with you now,
I’m sorry I let you down.

You said you’d be back in ten minutes,
I believed this to be true.
I never thought I’d be alone for the night,
And have to spend it without you.

Now I see why you didn’t return,
You were stopped and killed in the street.
I know this was true because of what I saw,
The pool of blood surrounding your feet.

Weakened at the knees, I too fell down,
And sat for a moment by your side.
I sat and waited for the police,
I sat, and waited, and cried.

The police finally came and asked me questions,
They asked me what I saw.
I told them all I have just explained,
About everything that happened before.

They let me go to mourn my loss,
And I went, I complete shock.
I was so terrified and bemused by it all,
I couldn’t fit my key in the lock.

I finally got in and sat in a chair,
I still couldn’t believe the night.
I couldn’t believe what I had seen,
It gave me an aching fright.

But now you’re gone,
And life will never be the same.
I bet you wish now,
That you never came.
