The Ally (Enemy, Part 3) Poem by Maya Hanson

The Ally (Enemy, Part 3)

I don't see her slip away,
a flicker among clouds.

***

It tears me up to leave him.
Why?

***

My chest aches for her.
It shouldn't.

***

My heart pounds harder and
all I can think is
Would he have saved me?

***

She's different, she's a mist,
she's not a beast, she's a world.

***

My fingers burn from
touching him.
Madness or magic?

***

Show me how a heart breaks and mends
Show me how an enemy
becomes all I live for

***

I never understood need until now.

***

All I need is to
see her again
and I promise myself
I won't use the life
she's given me
to kill any more of her kin.

***

He is different.

***

She is different.

***

This is forbidden.

***

This is connection.

***

We are allies.

***

We are one.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Part 3- this one starts with Akiva waking up and switches back and forth between Akiva and Madrigal's point of view. Once again inspired by Daughter of Smoke & Bone by Laini Taylor. I LOVE this book, and if you ever get a chance, you should read it.
