The American Dream Poem by chize ryan ogunkah

The American Dream

The American dream
A sordid cliché that caresses the ego of the "American"
And dwarfs the passion of the native kind

The American dream
A rancid ruse that chants a lie
to impressionable naivety

The American dream
Where living-melanin is contraband
And the possession of it is an unpardonable crime

The American dream
When court trial is very colourful
And justice is mete out through disparate lenses

The American dream
Where exploitation and expurgation of truth
Typifies its ‘flamboyant' history

The American dream
Where hearts pledge loyalty
To a course that is alien to their cause

The American dream
A fable and fiction to the coloured mind
And fairy tales that only meet happily ever-after
In a "white bread world".

What is the true American dream?
It is neither selective success nor showy splurging
but The American dream hangs from a cursed tree
Hoping that someday, from sealed lips, he'll be heard
