The Catalan Reciprocal Poem by Les Wordsmore

The Catalan Reciprocal

I look up at the Spanish street as I tap my cigarette
once, then take another sip of my café con leche.
Yes, I drink coffee here. I kind of like it now.

There's so much to see and do in this sleepless ciudad
that I can hardly bring up your image when I dream.
You've quit smoking and coffee stains your teeth.

I find love in every pretty eye mine meet these days.
I loved that girl I just saw once, when we were sixteen-
sometimes it comes around again. She didn't want me then.

You wanted me. And I wanted that in a girl.

Our whole love, the two of us, divided, halved
One alone, where she's been, the other on the other side
of the world. You severed our ties, I'm severely content.

Two eyes straight ahead.
Staring at love on every street.
