The Cruelest Element Poem by Barry Middleton

The Cruelest Element

the cruelest element is love
the heat is radiant
consuming all

no one escapes its soft allure
the fire within the eyes
the naive smile

then secret vows are often made
that love will never fade
at end of day

but promises are soon betrayed
I watch the sun go down
I stand alone

and yes I know I can't go back
I try to pass this on
we stand alone
