The Devil On My Heels Poem by Jessica Hughes

The Devil On My Heels

The devil on my heels...
I ran...looking back...
I thought my body would turn
into a pillar of salt.
Still whole___
I ducked, dodged, and hid
around corners.
She did her job.
Following me___
I kept running...panting...
My lungs felt as if they
were going to explode.
I had to stop.
Reflecting for a split second;
I reminisced about my actions
in years passed.
I felt her body heat.
She was coming for me.
What did she want?
If only I could find a safe place
to go.
Finally, I spotted a church building
a block away.
On bended knees, head bowed, praying...
She bursted through the doors.
'Peace be still', I whispered.
She fled and I was never the
same again.
