The Difference Poem by Robert Dummett

The Difference

Will you accept a black man's word for it
that I was born from spit?
Will you have tolerance
that I try to write your language?
It's only passing - not lasting.
But at least, by and by, you'll accept
I ventured to express feelings
both you and I share in common.

It's the only speech from
my vehicle of expression
You taught me this.
Then try to understand:
I too love as you:
physically, we are not far different -
except for weals you left on me
during the days of slavery.
