The Empty Handed Gift Poem by Vincent Feliciano

The Empty Handed Gift

What good is a love
Left in a box
If never it's heart
is heard by its knocks?

And how can a gift
Held close to the heart
Call back the years
Of the time kept apart?

Should a man wrap his dreams
In a box like a gift
And set it to the sea
To watch the waves make it drift?

An unopened gift
In the hands of a man
Is like a love unknown
By an empty hand

(this poem was a rebuttal to girl I liked who gave me a gift but I knew was playing me for a fool - her gift came with the following unoriginal poem you probably have heard) :

I took an ordinary box
As empty as can be
I filled it with a special gift
And wrapped it carefully

Please don't ever open it
Just leave the ribbon tied
And hold it tightly near
your heart
Because my love for you is inside
