The Fallen Poem by K.J. Jackson

The Fallen

I regret to inform you, that on this day,
Your daughter, your son, has gone away,
I rapt at your door, heavy-hearted dismay,
That your daughter, your son, on foreign soil they lay,

They took up their arms, No heed in their stride,
They fought bravely with valiant efforts they tried,
But only too soon, they were stricken and died,
But I was right there, along their side,
And in my arms held, their heads, and I cried,

They looked in my eyes, calmness overtook,
I never broke gaze, but my body, it shook,
The last words spoken, pages from a book,

"Do not weep for me, my brother in arms,
For this was my choice, be not alarmed,
My body is broken but my spirit unharmed,
A messenger you must be, my most precious charm,

'They bade me come closer, for their breath it grew weak,
They spoke so softly, against my rough cheek,
I absorbed every word, although I was meek,
Tears continued to roll, like a spring follows a creek,

The blood it flowed, and pooled underneath,
Of my army issued boots, all through the cleats
And I could feel their heart, every single, weak, beat,
Until, no more, skin white as a sheet,

I must inform you now, what they last told me,
For without sacrifice, we would not be free,
They did not falter, turn or begin to flee,
Instead, were struck down upon wounded knee,

"Tell everyone how deep is my love,
And I will be there looking down from above,
How a bird doth soar, a free, white winged dove,
I love you all and of me be proud of',

Now before I turn, and pass through your arch,
I must tell you although; my throat is quite parched,
They were strong and stood tall, to the very last march,
Like strong winds can bend, but never fissure a larch,

Be strong, be proud, please remember in solemn,
These brave soldiers who sacrificed, known as The Fallen.
