The Fighting 54th Black Regiment Poem by Edmund V. Strolis

The Fighting 54th Black Regiment

Rating: 5.0

When the cannon were silenced at last
after the last bayonet found its mark
Then the counting of loss had begun
Yet, the gain can never be measured

Stand proud for the brave fifty fourth
They stood for us, as well as themselves
Show allegiance to the brave fifty fourth
Who never let the flag touch the ground

Honor these brave men now buried
These souls who had every right to run
My brother and yours sergeant Carney
Proud that their flag was held high

These men born as slaves died as free men
Who knew better than them of the pain?
Yet into the breach they went forth
With lives to lose but the glory to gain.

Hey, Edmund! Hope this finds you well. I read this, and I wondered, is this about...? So I looked it up. Don’t know how accurate it is, but the film Glory is a powerful one. I’m glad to be reminded of it. -Glen

Wars are terrible but there's no denying that soldiers who lay down their lives are brave souls who believe in the ideal of Patriotism with all their hearts. It takes guts to fight for a cause and to risk your life to protect others. Thanks for giving a glimpse into history.

As with many things in life there is so much to the story. This is a story of faith, resolution, brotherhood and conviction. A belief in a better tomorrow. These men fought for freedom and dignity. There is great honor in earning the respect of others who may at one time have felt them to be unworthy of equality. They proved they were worthy and so much more.

Yes Kumarmani this not a glorification for the horrors of war but of men willing to sacrifice everything for future generations. They succeeded mightily.
