The Inner Child, Darkness Poem by alan brown

The Inner Child, Darkness

Softly the rain drummed its tune
on the glass of the darkened window
As beams of misty light flickered in
from the streetlamp below
Shadows danced across the ceiling
as I lay dreaming of the past

Memories as clear as the day they were born
like bolts of lightning passed before my eyes
Bringing a smile so sweet and appt
to my ever ageing face
Time was never in my favour
as the night went on
But vivid visions of my inner child
spoke endlessly to me
Bringing hope where there was none
and settlement to my fear.

I lay alone, as the clock on the bedroom wall
struck the 12th hour
The fear in me rose to an unestimated high
As the sounds of the night
shook my thinning bones.
Shadows no longer danced happily
across my ceiling
As the ghosts of the night formed their mottled crew

Screams pierced my ears as other folk
ran the gauntlet of the terror that lay before me
Heart pounding, I turned on the light.
And the fear in me subsided as the shadows mingled
with the softness of my homely room.
The inner child sighed a sigh of relief
as the night went on
