The Innocent Poem by C M Rice

The Innocent

Important things in life, I find we bet,
Family and friends oh! How I regret,
Never, I offered, the respect they deserve,

…. An angel in view and I fail to swerve,
Conceited I was, thinking of just me,
What of the damage? That I had not seen,
I’d spotted the child yet I was too late,
Hot with excitement teasing my date,
For selfish motives of pleasure of course,
And now it’s the reason behind my remorse,
The image I hold of this innocent,
Her beauty lay cold; it felt heaven sent,
To be at home, with my kid just reading,
Not with the police, stood here bleeding,
I wish I were there; asleep with my daughter,
Not here facing a charge of manslaughter,
The mother, my wife I see them so clear,
Handcuffs are placed tight; my eye drops a tear,
I hear in my head, I look to the moon,
My wife to our kid ‘Dad will be home soon’….

I see in darkness the mother I’ve left,
Consumed with the grief of my shameful theft,
This now will haunt me – the future the past,
I’m sorry – I was drunk and driving too fast,
Now that I say this – I feel what I’ve done,
The sorrow and pain – from my careless fun,
Running through my mind I will never forget,
That I – your dad caused this death.
