The Invalid Poem by jackilton peachum

The Invalid

THE INVALID
for Denyse Draper (! 939-1962)
(After Spanish of Rosalia de Castro

Feeling she must die with summer's death,
the invalid alone, incurable,
thinks with mixed emotions,
'I shall die in fall-- and over my grave,
the rustling of the leaves-- dead too! '
but rapacious death! no help could come of him--
Life kept her through the winter
and in spring strangled her slowly
amidst the sounds of a world new-born!
