The Last Shovel Poem by Jeryn Bean

The Last Shovel

As they drop the last shovel full,
he drops to his knees,
as he lays his soul to bare,
and cry's out to the heaven,

'why? ! ' but only the rain hears his call.
his friends pat his back,
but it does no good.
he lost a brother, a friend, and a comrade.

one that can never be replaced,
and leaves a hole in his heart and soul,
one that can never be filled.
his friends pull him away, as he's too weak to stand.

he lays there in bed,
staring at the ceiling,
as he remembers what his brother said,
'don't cry when im gone, be happy i was here.'

and as he remembers,
the sorrow lessens,
as he thinks back at what was,
the laughs, and the fun.

and the hole has been filled,
if only a little.
