The Man Before Me Poem by Rusty Ed Gibson

The Man Before Me

Rating: 5.0

I didn’t mean to be so rough
just wanted you to grow up tough
I didn’t want for you to be scared
when I am gone and no longer there
This what my dad finally told to me
before he passed and left his family

He fought and struggled to hang on
but we turned around and he was gone
He wasn’t real big or even real tall
but one time or another he had carried us all
He was the man I want to be
strong and brave with the heart of three

Where do you go where do you turn
when life’s got you down and it all starts to burn
Who do you know that you can look to
when you start to slip or you’re feeling blue
I hope that all of my friends and family know
that they can always count on me
I will do my best in their moment of need
I will be there like the man before me

So if someone is kind and generous to you
pay it down the line is what you should do
Give as much as you possibly can
for those you love - you be the Man!
Remember that person that was there for you
in bad times ask what would they do

Where will you go what will you do
when life’s got you down and its all looking blue
I hope that all of my friends and family knew
That they could always count on me
I did my best in their moment of need
I tried to be there like the man before me
