The Maradu Demolitions Poem by narayana aghalaya

The Maradu Demolitions

the high rise towers,
the way they were all brought down
much praise be showered
as special skills have been shown
by our engineers, all home grown

not even a bit
of collateral damage
as the ground was hit
by debris' massive tonnage;
leaving.guilty builders.dazed

these builders have learnt:
' when coastal rules are ignored
fingers will get burnt '
and the buyers who were lured,
loss, they are forced to endure

Adarsh society,
famous, high rise in Mumbai
of high and mighty
to coastal rules.said bye-bye
curiously, not razed why?

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Cochin, India
Maradu in the coastal area, four high rise apartment blocks had been built. These were illegal as they were too close to the coastline. After prolonged litigation, Supreme Court ordered their demolition. But there were nearby other legal buildings which should not suffer collateral damage. The Government appointed a private engineering company which had the required expertise. With careful planning, the four high rise buildings were demolished in seconds with carefully placed explosives. No collateral damage was done. This is a big engineering breakthrough. The builders have lost heavily. Also the hapless buyers habe lost most of their investment.A similar case in Mumbai, the Adarsh Society, was also found to be illegal from coastal rules as we as several other rules. But inspite of over a decade of litigation, no final decision has been taken.
