The Melbourne Mynas Poem by Francis Duggan

The Melbourne Mynas

In fancy their distinctive songs I do hear
When above the Melbourne suburbs the dawn is breaking clear
The birds known as common mynas in fawn and dark brown
Birds often seen and heard in the bigger urban town
Introduced to Australia from Asia a long time ago
The Melbourne Mynas they are not to know
That they are not Aussies as some people do say
They don't know their ancestors were from far away
By some people the mynas are not treated fair
They even call them the cane toads of the air
But despite some persecution the mynas survive
And even in some suburbs they are known to thrive
Characters in their own right with a distinctive song
The mynas to Melbourne they surely belong.
