The Mother Is Left For To Grieve For Her Son Poem by Francis Duggan

The Mother Is Left For To Grieve For Her Son

The war it is over the battle is won
But the mother is left for to grieve for her son
For the rest of her life she will bear her sorrow cross
And victory in war won't ease her sense of loss
Her only child he was all that she had
She raised him without any help from his dad
He left her when their child was only three
The last of him that she was ever to see
The returned soldiers were welcomed back home to the town
The band through the streets for them played up and down
But her son's remains are at rest in the town cemetery
The victory celebrations he did not live to see
He did not live to father children and grow old and gray
For victory in war the price is huge to pay.
