The Nobel Prize Poem by Elvis Lantan

The Nobel Prize

'What a stupid man'—said those who were wise
Those who dominated math
And perfected every language
'How useless, ' they said as they marched away

They spoke of theories
Of the way in which the world worked
They never mispronounced a word
They never tripped; never stumbled

They were owners of the world
They were important
They never stopped
Not even while the world laid itself to sleep

They deserved silver
They deserved gold
Songs and praises
With eyes closed—the world gave them all

But I walked in plain streets
Poor and humiliated
I didn’t know how to count
I didn’t know science

I never wished to be a wise man
I never wished silver or gold
Mathematics bored me
I wanted to be a fool of literature
