The Pigeons And The Welfare Cheats Poem by Daniel Karbon

The Pigeons And The Welfare Cheats

The pigeons and the welfare cheats muddle about in the light of God
Stretching out their wings and tasting
The fruit of the garden
They are outrageous in their dances, in their games
They hold an undeniable piece of the Fire in their bodies
No man is a memory
No woman a mystery
They speak of patterns; their books are filled with them
But when I walk on the streets among angels
When I cut my teeth on all that is animal
When I wake up with your hand in mine
Anything is possible
The laughter is real
And the blues run as deep as the River
Deep as the throat of the bullfrog
And the harmonica player, too.
