The Right Thing Poem by Diana van den Berg

The Right Thing

Sometimes
discovering
or knowing
the truth
and doing the right thing
about it
can shatter one's heart
and rip one's liver apart
and wrench out one's lungs
and crash a battering ram
into one's solar plexus
with the power of a cannon
but the harder it is
the more right it is
and that is our consolation
and I know
we will both do our part
with every fibre of our being.

Talk about brutal! This poem is really powerful and intense. And yet, I would agree with your sentiments, from my own experience. Although, of course, I have no idea what this right thing is that you are speaking of.

Thank you, Laurie. Yes, doing the right thing can be hard, but it is always worth it and the only thing to do.
