The Sixties Poem by Suzanne Stroop

The Sixties

Rating: 4.5

You think you have it good?
We had it better.
You think you're hot stuff?
We weren't hot...
We were cool water.

Summer sun, beaches snow white,
And no cold weather.
Wearing mini skirts, shimmy tops,
And lace underwear.

Drivin' down the road
With the wind at our backs.
Long haired boys
Dancin' slow dances,
Makin' magic.

No hip hop but real rock.
The Dirty Dog...
Shake it and show them what ya' got.
Grind and grind again.

Class rings, going steady,
With a transistor radio against your ear.
Live bands with the amps on high alert.
The Tropics, The Tempests,
The Movers...we had them all.

Teacher's strike
With no one there to take the roll.
Leavin' school with no one the wiser.
Heading to the white sand,
Hoping for a hot date on Friday night.

Surfer's Club, Jokers, Electric Zoo...
Head bangers beware...we did it first.
We did it all and then did it all again.

Peace signs, love songs
Played so you knew each word.
A smoke and then a toke...who cared?
Lovin' life, makin' love...
Such good vibrations.

Hate to tell you but it all ends.
One day you wake up with kids,
Wake up again and they've moved on...
Wake up once more and then remember
How it was back then...
Back when you were young.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
