The Sound Of Peace Poem by Smoky Hoss

The Sound Of Peace

Rating: 5.0

Walking alongside a beautiful creek
I heard a rock singing.
I went to it, and listened.
The sound, a voice divinely dancing;
the wandering water, the trees and the breeze, the sunshine,
all sang along... I was drawn
into the Peace.
After some time
I took the rock to my home,
placed it upon a shelf,
and waited for it to sing to me.
It remained silent.
No utterance did I hear.
Not a sound.
Time passed, on and on...
I nearly forgot it all,
like a dream of an unconnected past.

Late in life
I had to move on, and away;
all the stuff I had collected
could not go along.
Cleaning out, I discovered anew
the old singing-rock that I had heard so long ago,
sitting in dusty silence.
Somehow I felt
I must return the rock
to the flowing stream from whence it had come.
The journey back was not easy,
dangerous at times, but
determination got me there.
I layed the rock down
into the cool, clean, rippling water.
The sun was shinning keenly,
the breeze danced with the trees,
birds and squirrels and rabbits
were joyously conversing throughout the happy woods.
All was well, once again.

As I walked back
to where I belong for awhile longer,
at the edge of the woods,
far from the little creek of flowing waters,
I stopped, and listened...
ah yes, it had been so many years, but
I recognized the song immediately,
the rock had resumed singing...
and I had resumed hearing.

For the rest of my days,
wherever I went,
coming or going,
I could hear the song...
the eternal singing of the rock,
the sound of Peace.

Hey, Smoky! I enjoyed this narrative. Without you saying it explicitly, I thought of all that sings when situated where it belongs but ceases its song when moved away. And, of course, you remind us of the healing and peace found by all in nature, whether or not its Creator is acknowledged. Continued peace to you, brother. -Glen
