The Wedding Poem by Lindsay King

The Wedding

Rating: 4.0

i saw the pictures
from the wedding
-not yours,
but might as well have been
well,
at least i know
that you don't really love her
i can see it in your eyes
and the glazed look
of sincere naivety
in hers
i think you
just may have loved me
i think you
could have felt
that should have been me
like a solitary regret
you know
it should have been me
i never even knew
she finally tied the knot
-around his neck
oh, i'm sorry
that's just the bitterness talking
and the drink soothing my throat
the bitter words embedded on my wrist
one day she'll ask
whatever happened to me
and oh, what will you say?
i think there was a point
when those words
weren't bullshit
when you looked into my eyes
and i did more than
just 'get the job done'
it's easier to
put up with mediocrity
than search for the real thing
to make it really stick
you know who it should have been
i saw the pictures
from the wedding
searched through all of them
bit by bit
and piece by piece
never knew it happened
the emptiness in her eyes
oh,
you know it should have been me
