There Will Never Be Another One Like Burns Poem by Francis Duggan

There Will Never Be Another One Like Burns

There will never be another one like Burns he was far more than Scotland's National poet
He danced he sang he laughed and he made merry the legendary literary man of note
His poems and songs were born with music in them his 'Auld Lang Syne' around the World is known
It truly can be said of Robert Burns that he was one in a class of his own.

I recall the first time I heard 'Afton Water' at the Millstreet September Horse Fair when I was a boy
Sung in the Town Square by a wandering minstrel a memory to this day I do enjoy
A horse dealer told me that's a song of Burns his legend in time only seems to grow
It was my introduction to the great poet in time going back more than fifty years ago.

One can sense the music in the poems of Burns true poets are born they cannot be made
The Ayrshire Ploughboy a poetic natural a legendary figure of the Wordsmith trade
His 'Red Red Rose' and 'To A Mouse' and 'To A Mountain Daisy' made him famous beyond his Homeland shore
The poems of Burns belong to the masses and are destined to live forever more.

He surely was a poet of the people and his type are and always have been rare
With any poet of any time or language he is one who can favourably compare
Celebrated as the National Bard of Scotland a legend far from his home countryside
A ploughboy and one who was self educated and greatness of him cannot be denied.
