They Broke Up On Christmas Eve Poem by Daya Nandan

They Broke Up On Christmas Eve

He broke up with her for her own good,
He left her because he knew that he should,
He knew that he could not keep her emotions at bay,
He knew that she would be trapped if he let her stay,

His family wasn't ready for her,
He was not able to stop her from shedding each tear,
He left her even after being confronted by her family,
He left her because he wanted her to have the key,

The key to her freedom, the key to her future,
The key to a better man that would stop the torture,
He understood the nature of her long term fight,
And he understood that he had to do what was morally right,

He was happy that he was her stepping stone,
He was proud to see how much stronger she had grown,
He was happy to have done his best for her,
He had been happy to be the shoulder for every tear,

He had left behind the only person he had cared about,
The woman he loved without a shadow of doubt,
Because he knew deep down that he was not enough,
He knew that in the long run he would make her life tough,

He knew that she deserved so much more,
He knew that he had to walk out the door,
Like a poor mother giving her newborn that she loved for adoption,
Like a soldier that would readily die for his nation,

He knew that he had to remove himself from her life,
He had to give up the idea of making her his wife,
He had to let go of all the memories he had held close,
He had to stand firmly by the decision he chose,

He finally understood what it means to love somebody so much,
Even if it means to never again feel her touch,
He could never again feel her warm embrace,
He could never again caress her hair an hold her face,

He wanted her to be happy even if he was not apart of it,
He wanted her to move forward, their love had to split,
He had loved her enough to let her go,
So that she would achieve greater heights and continue to grow,

The world would see him as a monster, but he did her a favour without her even realising it. He had finally realised that sometimes when you truly love someone, youhave to let them go for their own good. No matter how much it hurts him inside. No matter how much he wanted to fight it. He did the best thing he could for her happiness and her future. He could only love her from afar and pray that she finds a man that treats her better than h ever could.
