Those Who Need Us Poem by Jan Oskar Hansen

Those Who Need Us

Those who need us

"Who knocks so quite on, the cloister's, door
A poor waif from a land afar."
The rest of the song is the miasma of years.

Many people in this world are born under
An unlucky star and seek a place of peace
Somewhere in Europa.

Europe is not too kind some strangers are
Needed to do low-paid work cleaning toilets
And vomit caused by those of plenty.

We call them criminals when they are
Just like you and me, but disadvantaged
Of being born at places of strife.

We have, no duty, but humanity
To lend a helping hand because they
Didn't come to rob us but to work and live

There was a time when Europa was poor
Many went to bed starving; this can
Happen again is all in the luck of the stars
