Time Poem by Mustafa Marconi

Time

Time. you deceitful rascal
How you have filled my soul with humility
Having lived long enough
To appreciate my mortality
To concede that at no single point in my life
Was I invincible
Looking back at every wasted opportunity
Opportunities to spiritually expand
Opportunities to socially connect
And opportunities to mentally emancipate myself
All pushed to the side
Unfinished projects to be attended to, at a later date
Because I possessed
As I thought, an abundance of time
Time, you wretched knave
How you led me to believe
In unlimited tomorrows
Allowing procrastination and complacency
To befriend the very essence of my naïveté
Allowing arrogance to infiltrate
My untrained defenses
Reveling in trivial victories
And inconsequential accomplishments
While true life was passing me by
Unused hours, minutes, and seconds
That eluded my grasp
Gone forever, never to return
Time, how I long to finally befriend you
To manipulate and control you
To fill in the various blank spaces
Scattered throughout my consciousness
So much to do
So much to see
So much to remedy
As my candle continues to burn
