To Ms. Bryce Poem by Cane Walker

To Ms. Bryce

I'm the one who could never get to see you
As you were gone by the time I dragged my feet
To where you were.

I'm the one who read your mind a decade ago
And had since begun my search for you,
But you were lost in your dreams
Of fakirs and rockets
And could never hear my footsteps.

Of course, it's natural
For a lady like you
To say good-bye
And perform the disappearing act
Without a hint,
In the blink of an eye.

So I suppose it's all right
For you to remain where you are
And for me to be where I am.
