The first of my four wives
Once described my life
As a Bad Russian Novel
And this morning my
Current and fourth wife
Responding to my observation
That after going Up to Cambridge
I wore cravats and breakfasted
On wild strawberries and pink champagne
In the company of my teddy bear Algernon
Said that it had been all downhill since then
And that my life had all the bathos of a Greek Tragedy.
Australian and New Zealand girls
Can be very cutting
But as Ned Kelly said
In less fortunate circumstances:
‘Such is life’.
