Trouble With The Ten Commandments Poem by Gil Tee

Trouble With The Ten Commandments

I went to confession yesterday
For I know that I have sinned
But I really couldn’t think quite what to say
I didn’t know where to begin
Cuz I’m a really nice guy and I never lie
I’m always kind to everyone
But something’s changed, I’ve become deranged
Now I’m confessing in this song...

I’m having trouble with the Ten Commandments
Like I’ve never had before
And it’s all because of the people
Who just moved in next door
I know that covetousness is a terrible sin
Cuz I’ve been taught that all my life
But in spite of myself I just can’t help
Coveting my neighbour’s wife
And I can only say in mitigation
She’s like an angel from above
A paragon of God’s creation
Whom it’s impossible not to love
And if you saw her I think you’d realize
Why she looks like an angel in my eyes
There’s no defence against my offence
But any man with a heart would sympathi-i-ise.

I’m having trouble with the Ten Commandments
Although I’ve tried hard to resist
The trouble is that my neighbour’s wife
Has got lips that I long to kiss
And it’s no good saying Hail Mary
Cuz that’s the name of the lady who
Has made me stray from the good Lord’s way
Without even trying to
Now is it only my imagination
Or something I’ve been dreaming of?
This could be middle-aged infatuation
But I’d swear that I’m in love
And if you saw her you’d agree with me
She really does look heavenly
The way she walks and the way she talks
Is the way I’m sure it’s meant to be-e-e.

I’m having trouble with the Ten Commandments
Like I never thought I would
And it’s all because I love my neighbour
A little more than I really should
And it’s no good saying Hail Mary
Cuz that’s the name of the lady who
Has made me stray from the good Lord’s way
Whom I love like I shouldn’t do
I guess there’s little chance of expiation
Although I pray nearly every night
For the strength to resist temptation
Because I know it isn’t right
And if you saw her I think you’d realize
Why I try to undress her with my eyes
There’s no defence against my offence
But any red-blooded male would empathi-i-ise
Yes if you saw her you’d agree with me
She really does look heavenly
The way she walks and the way she talks
Is the way I’m sure it’s meant to be-e-e.
