Versus....4 Poem by Ian Kellett

Versus....4

And the man I saw came closer,
With weight in his eyes and sloth in his step
And double in his back and bone in his head
And nakedness that fed the air with an air
Of surrender and no defence or deference
Yet completely different to every single
One about him, and he strode up to me and
Stopped and said.
“See me hence; I have come this way again,
And seen this for the first time. Many a year
I tread to see them; see them strengthen, see
Them crawling and climbing to the ground,
See the back straighten, the arms shorten,
The hands tool for ambitious uses - and all my
Walking has led me here, to this point that they
Have made. All that the powers of love and
Evolution have riven is this – and this is it.”
And he was gone, carrying his eyes like a
Threshold reached bride.
