Vessels Of Time Poem by Je'free Y .

Vessels Of Time

Behind this new sunrise,
The stars that have migrated like eastward birds,
Laid sparkling on a bed of night clouds.
The lights of the buildings have shut off,
While coastal lamp posts have broken the darkness.
The coffeehouse at the end of Avenue A has
Displayed its 'Closed' sign at its door.
The verdict on the Mayor's drug trafficking has
Left the Daily News hanging in the gray.

Under this morning glory,
A mother breastfeeds an infant who cried all night.
'Early birds' take the subway's first day trip
To the cosmopolitan industry of downtown.
The school bus driver takes his first bite of donut,
As a grandma heads to her 7am novena.
The barbershop opens its door for its first client,
And the blood on the street from last night's crime is
Being washed away.

I wonder what the next daylight brings.
Will the farmers rejoice at harvest,
Or will the fishermen lament at having no catch?
Will icebergs in Antarctica recede,
Or will Science discover more about Andromeda?
Maybe, the poets will write about
Civilization and its mistakes of the past.
