Vincent Van Gogh 55 - A Big Mistake? Poem by Geeta Radhakrishna Menon

Vincent Van Gogh 55 - A Big Mistake?

Rating: 5.0

A true artiste seeks excellence.
He draws and draws to get the ideal picture.
He sketches till he gets a flawless frame.
A long process, indeed,
In pursuit of precision and perfection!

Vincent's father Theodorus could never understand
Why Vincent was never getting his painting right.
He felt a talented artiste should be able draw easily,
Without tearing down his sketches a hundred times.
He felt his son had not chosen the right profession!

"Dear Son Vincent", asserted his father:
"It seems to me that if you had any talent,
If you were really cut out to be an artist,
Those sketches would come right the first time.
I wonder, if you aren't making a mistake? ".

But Vincent hardly listened to his father.
He continued painting a peasant,
Who was kneeling down before a bag
In which he was putting the potatoes.
He was trying to get the peasant's arm accurately.

His father continued to talk to Vincent.
"An artist's work is either good or bad.
If it is bad, he is no artiste.
He ought to have found that out for himself
Early enough and not wasted all his time and effort."

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
These poems are biographical poems on the famed painter- Vincent Van Gogh. All information on Vincent Van Gogh is taken and is based on two great books - ‘Lust for life' & ‘Dear Theo' - a biography and an autobiography respectively, penned by the famed American Author - Irving Stone. Dear friends and Poets, Thank you so much for reading this series on Vincent Van Gogh's life. I am ever grateful to all the poets who are reading these poems. I do hope you will continue to read them. Ever obliged for your kind comments. Back home with his family, Vincent's father always doubted his son's ability as an artiste. He felt he was wasting his time and had no definite goal in life. Vincent Van Gogh Painting -The Cottage 1885

So, pray tell, who was 'expressing/saying' what is found in stanza 1? Father? Maybe Vincent cared to BE an 'artist', NOT an 'artiste'! ! ! If I 'had more time' I'm sure more of your series of poems would be entertaining for me. bri ;)

This new episode tells us about the craving of Vincent to master the art of painting on the one hand, while on the other, the disconsolation of his father at his lack of success… exquisitely written. And thank you for sharing the marvellous painting, Geeta.

No ordinary person could understand the efforts of a great artist. Yes, in pursuit of precision and perfection, one must practice innumerable times.

As a true artist, Vincent was always in pursuit of precision and perfection till he got a flawless frame of a painting. This is exactly what made his paintings unique. Thanks, Geeta ji.

It is truly a marvelous series of biographical poem on the life of Vincent Van Gogh. Vincent's passion for Art was too high to be distracted by negative comments on his ability as an artist. He did not care for material success and aimed for perfection in his art
