Waking To Adulthood - Poem by Olumide Omoyele

Like a shot
a bolt from the blue
fun and games evaporate
disillusionment and anger beckons
pain - not a pleasant thing
if you deliberate on it much
the amelioration of beast-man
still a distant promise
like a perpetually jabbing prize fighter
with no saviour bell on the horizon
it arrives unannounced and pokes and
burns - a bullet to the unsuspecting
they have an innocuous name for it - adulthood
