Warning Voices Poem by Willem VanVoorthuysen

Warning Voices

The night was getting older,
and so, it seemed, were they,
together once again, but each engulfed
in memories of different times,
and different places,
different people...

A misty moon reluctantly kept shining,
for them alone, there on that empty beach,
and as the breeze was getting bolder,
they suddenly embraced for warmth,
to find they had not gotten older,
and so they kissed, till time
became irrelevant...

When she woke up again, she was alone...
and cried on that forsaken, cold, dark beach,
and listening to the crashing surf,
she heard this bitter old refrain:
'Each dashing wave that hurries towards shore mustbreak apart,
each reckless kiss that asks for more
must break a heart.'

O careless, hasty ones,
why not take time to listen to
the urgent voice of wisdom, saying,
'Wait patiently for true love's pure champagne,
and drink not from the tainted wine
of lust without restraint.'
