“Like giving an after-dinner mint to a dead man’s heartache, ”
a line came drifting in and settled in my mind,
after falling asleep to Camus.
Then the rain came and some noises in the night in my room,
and the still darkness kept me awake,
so the line, “like giving an after-dinner mint to a dead man’s heartache, ”
came floating in on the silence and I woke up enough to write it down.
Later I wondered what it meant or might mean and thought of how best to use it,
since I knew it was a poetic gift and could be made to mean something,
then I realized that it was like giving an after-dinner mint to a dead man’s heartache,
