What Should I Wear At The End Of The World Poem by Allan Thorne

What Should I Wear At The End Of The World

Oh what shall I wear to the end of the world?

Black velvet perhaps
And a single string of pearls
In honor of the bitter sadness
And profound solemnity of the affair.

Or clownish motley and a big floppy hat
A jumble of mocking stripes and pocadots
Laughing in the face of cruel absurdity.

Or maybe I should attend “Sans vestment”,
Naked like a prisoner in the rain
A quiet testament
To my much abused humanity.

But then camo fatigues may
Prove more appropriate
Particularly if they are only joking
About the end of the world
And it is in fact
Only the end of civilization.

If there is to be finger pointing and blame
Than perhaps a red and green and black dashiki
So that all will know it wasn’t my fault
But those damn white devils
In their sober gray suits
That have brought us to this.

Truth is it doesn’t matter what you wear
To the End of the World.
Attendance is mandatory.
You can’t miss it if you try
So don’t make a fuss
Just come as you are.
