When Faith Elopes Poem by Kurt Philip Behm

When Faith Elopes

Rating: 5.0

What are words
if not remembered

What are feelings
never spent

What is time
if not then fleeting

What is love
not heaven sent

What are gifts
beneath the wrapping

What are wishes
beyond all hope

What are words
if not remembered

What is left
—when faith elopes

Although the common usage for the word elope means to wed in secret, the word is also used by the staff of mental hospitals to describe a patient's disappearance. A mental patient on the lam isn't said to have escaped, like a prisoner, but rather to have eloped. I like the imagery - faith has left, but faith was kept inside because it was deemed insane to start with. Otherwise, I don't know what you're suggesting by using the word elope - has faith secretly wed some other virtue in the night? If so, which, and why? But, in the sense of faith being a mental patient, I do like your choice. This is a good verse.
