When I Say 'We' Poem by Nancy Ames

When I Say 'We'

'She told us she had known
our leader as child,
but he was overthrown
the day the crowd went wild.

She ran but we caught her -
a woman with a pail
means hot, running water,
just one more small detail.

When I say 'we', I mean
the trained and certified,
and no one here has been
what we have all denied.

Tell whoever's winning
a slim majority,
ending the beginning
of his authority,

To stop the humidity
or the polluted air -
you can equalize stupidity
but you can't make it fair.'
