When You Said I Do Poem by Sarah Mkhonza

When You Said I Do

The tune I hear is loud as the fear,
That sips through my bones in the rear,
That yesterday was just a tear
When you said I do.

You were standing opposite fear
And warred against time to prove,
How truth could be built out of two words,
Now it is quite a story.

Two children down, I still stand,
And say it was wisdom born there,
Where you took an oath,
About this familiar of words,
That drive us on, no matter what,
Just because yesterday you said I do.

Questions about your will were asked,
These to be kept in the air between a world,
That listened and looked at a pair,
Stuck in a minute of uniting,
Like a world wielding words that create,
What is an agreeing of the ages.

Now I shed a tear for there was fear,
The unknown stood there creating,
Scenarios I could not imagine,
Yet I stood and did nothing but stand.
Two babies down I do not wonder,
Why I stood there unsure, for it was
Written in the wind that you would try,
To keep a promise made among many, by many
For the best of reasons.
