Why Can'T I Have It Now/ Poem by Don Dickenson

Why Can'T I Have It Now/

There are lots of things I want,
but never seem to get.
Like when I was a child,
a ‘Great Dane’, as a pet.
For when I asked, quite nicely,
Dad gave a weary smile,
looked me up and down, then said,
“you’ll have to wait a while.”
One of my friends had rabbits,
His Mum said “only two.”
I didn’t understand it,
But he soon had quite a few
One ‘Great Dane’ wouldn’t multiply,
Of that I felt so sure.
But Dad, had made his mind up,
Not listening any more
And now I’m in my eighties,
No ‘Great Dane’ I’ve ever had.
He said I was to wait a while,
So it’s time I asked my dad..
