Why Newborns Cry Poem by Je'free Y .

Why Newborns Cry

I, like everyone else,
Do not have a vivid recollection
Of my physical disconnection from mom.
I snuck in this world of loans & utility bills
Wondering if the infants in my same nursery
Were already terrified of being scolded
For spilling milk at breakfast,
Or already afraid of losing in a sibling rivalry
Over hand-me-downs.

If I could give a reason
For my first-shed, virgin tears,
It would be for the school homework,
And for the fear of being ostracized
For not smoking weed with the other teens.

For others, they must have cried
For their inevitable unwed teenage pregnancy,
And their incapability to handle
A job interview amidst economic crisis.

Maybe, newborns do not only cry
Over future taxes, medical bills, divorce,
Politics, boredom, or death;
But, they shed tears of joy
For medals, trophies, wedding proposal,
Cure for cancer, the end of holy wars,
Or even welcoming more newborn cries.
