Words I Want To Hear Poem by DiAnne Douglass

Words I Want To Hear

Can I ask you a question?
Why me?
Why choose me?
I don't try to kid myself
I know I'm not the kind of girl
You dreamed of
I'm not girly
I wear jeans and hang with the guys
I laugh at almost all their jokes
Including the one that many girls
Would be shocked to hear
I don't like make-up
Except on special occasions
I'm not big on having a lot of jewelry
I like to listen to guys talk about cars
And love chatting with the geeks and nerds
I'm kinda nerdy myself
I talk a lot when I'm nervous
Or sometimes not at all
I'm random and inconsistent
I must seem like such a pain
I complain about the little things
And shrug of the bigger problems
With a smile or a laugh
I try not to let you see me cry
I'm even kinda violent
Especially when I'm mad
Some people call me crazy
Perhaps they could be right
So why choose me?
I'm definitely not
The girl you dreamed of

'No, you're definitely not'
Comes the response
I turn away to hide my tears
'You're different than what I imagined
Friendly and full of life
Passionate but still a little shy
Smiles and laughter seem to follow you around
Even when you're about to collapse
Falling to the ground
Wanting to cry so bad, it hurts so much
Though most people don't notice
Since you often wear a smile
You're not the girl I dreamed of
But the girl I dreamed of
Could never compete with you
You may not think you're better than her
But I would still rather be with you
Because I love you'

I smile, despite the tears
I want to hug you close
How did you know?
Those were the words I wanted to hear the most...
