Words Well Worth 42: Let's Love Whatso Is Fair



Woman weighed with virtue,
Bower bent with blossoms' hue,
Speech weighed with meaningful fare,
Let's like whatso is good and fair.

Transliteration of the subhāśhita along with the meanings of Sanskrit words is given as under:

shīla-bhāravatī kāntā puśhpa-bhāravatī latā |
artha-bhāravatī vāņī bhaja te kam api shriyam ||

shīla-bhāravatī: weighed down with virtue
kāntā: a beautiful woman
puśhpa-bhāravatī: bedecked/leaning with a blossom of flowers
latā: a creeper on a bower
artha-bhāravatī: full of/weighed with meaningful words
vāņī: speech
bhaja: let us praise, let's like
te: that
kam api: whatso
shriyam: (be) auspicious

In olden days it was felt that if the lady of the house is virtuous, children will also be so.
