You Are One Of Us Poem by Nancy Terrell

You Are One Of Us

YOU ARE ONE OF US

You are one of us
No matter how you choose to separate
Blood, genetics and love
Binding us in an unending glue

You are one of us
So, yes, declare your independence
As we have done before you
but know that you are still connected
Into the surface and underground
Of humanity

I understand that you want your freedom
But why cut us off - we have created you
Born in our wombs and brought forth through our love
We, who were here before you
Understand your desire for escape

But we are not your enemy
We are not what you desire to bypass
We are what you embrace without knowing
For we have had these dreams before you
It is the folly of youth
to think that your desires are original

For we are from the aged
We have not only lived what you have desired
But have actually fulfilled your dreams
Of a better life, of seas yet unexplored
Of mountains yet to be climbed

Yet, when equated into a life driven
by the greed of our elites
reducing us all to a life
of unparalleled boredom, in consequence, and dullness
Of lives visioned and yet unspent
We squelch in horror
