Young Girl In Modernity Poem by G. Akanji Olaniyi

Young Girl In Modernity

Dear young girl
Be happy to find yourself in modernity
Have you heard about any past traditional young girl?
Her case was that of pure civility
She was meant to be an innocent girl
Her pride was her raw virginity
Though she could display the character of a girl
Yet, her pride must be in sanctity
The price on her as a girl
Is more than just her domestic ability
Every day, she was trained to be a girl
To be ready for servitude to masculinity
She was made to carry the pot as a girl
To bring water home near or far around the vicinity
On her way, prying eyes watch the beauty of a girl
Temptations and proposals could come, even from rare nobility
She was required to refuse her instincts as a girl
And wait for day of probity
She must watch the pot given to her as a girl
It must not break before the night of accountability
Her suitor would desire her pride as a girl
The night he asked for her pot in stark totality
Even family members would want to know if she was still the girl
Or the pot is broken and she became a woman in full capacity
In that case, she would no more be a girl
But a shame to her family and close relativity
My dear young girl
See all you have gracefully missed with modernity
