Ruby Dodd Poems

Well he dosen't really say much but he knows the ways of men
He's watched while men walked on the moon then journeyed back again

He's seen men dive beneath the sea and watched while wars were won
...

Weep not for me when I am gone beyond the sunset hills
Just past the fountains of delight you'll find me waiiting still

For you to lead me forward i'll wait by heaven's stream
...

He walks the streets in silence and hangs his head in shame
Sometimes he wonders if his god can still recall his name
Time was he had a family, a warm and loving wife
Knew happiness and sunshine and led a normal life
...

Tell me is it fun to go to the beach
When the sky is all sunny and blue
Or go for a ride on a bicycle
Like millions of people do
...

The little boy stood silently and watched the men march by
He saw the pretty uniforms and flags that waved on high
He's much to young to realize those men marched off to war
His tender mind can't comprehend just what they're fighting for
...

Deep in the heart of Texas
Hidden among the trees
Lies a home for the weary
Traveler
...

A glimmer that starts in the corner of the eye
A shimmering scent of red apples baking in a pie
that tickles my brain whenever you pass by
and then becomes a quivering shaking feeling
...

Well he's always where you need him
Long before you know you do
And he'll shoulder any burden
For his need to help is true
...

Tired and hungry, softly crying was the little boy in red
As he sat there on that sidewalk that had last night had been his bed

And I saw him there this morning when I walked that way to work
...

There's an old accordian playing in the corner of my heart
By the back roads of my memory long before we had to part
There's a drum thats softly beating notes as gentle as a sigh
And it's turning back life's pages to a time that's long gone by
...

M y son is in the infantry and he just turned nineteen
He is a high school graduate who just gave up his dreams
He left his old jalopy and a girl he loved so dear
And he told me ' mom don't worry cause i'll be home next year'
...

Dear God your humble servant is down upon her knees
I hope you have some time tonight to read a note from me
I know we haven't talked much in such a long long time
But i've just got to talk to you about what's on my mind
...

He stands straight and proud with his shoulders back
And his childlike grin locked away
And my heart stands still when I look at him
But tears flowed at his going away
...

Life never seems to go like we plan
There are hurdles we find on the way
And the cold winds of life blow hard and blow strong
As we scurry along every day
...

Last night as I laid down to sleep, dark shadows round my bed
Saddened my thoughts and brought the tears my tired eyes would shed
I know not what the shadows mean, like friends they came my way
I only know that now you're gone with me each night they stay
...

Today, I came across a book, it's pages torn and old
The binding cracked and brittle, the covers touched by mold
It was hiddden in the attic in a box all tucked away
By a little boy who lived here once when he was young one day
...

The whispy tendrils of approaching dawn
do steal with eager fingers cross the purple sky
then find an open casement and they steal inside
the small dark room where with my love I lie
...

18.

Standing there before me was my little girl of three
she threw her arms up in the air and this she said to me

' Pick me up please daddy and hold me very tight
...

Good night, sweet prince, they're playing taps
In that graveyard where you lay
The parade is over, the flags are gone
And they left you here today
...

His history is written by the scars upon his face
They're souvenirs of the role he played to save the human race
He didn't understand those rules when he marched off to war
He only knew it was a cause that was worth fighting for

The Best Poem Of Ruby Dodd

Old Greybeard

Well he dosen't really say much but he knows the ways of men
He's watched while men walked on the moon then journeyed back again

He's seen men dive beneath the sea and watched while wars were won
And he can name a thousand plants that grow beneath God's sun

And he can help you build a home or just chop down a tree
He always looks around him and remembers what he sees

Each night when he's through eating he washes up his plate
And goes into the bedroom to turn on channel eight

There he'll abssorb some knowledge before his day is done
Or just watch some predator, a movie, just for fun

And when he wakes tomorrow he'll just begin again
To celebrate life quietly this good and quiet man

Just ask his wife and children I know they will agree
There should be many morfe like him from sea to shining sea

For honesty and goodness he'll always take a stand
And live to do his very best to help his fellow man

Ruby Dodd Comments

Ruby, May I say this without sounding patronising? Since I'm not? There are some few poets who express popular sentiments in a personal way, from their heart - and not because they have a contract with Hallmark Cards! ! And they say it, because it's from their heart, in a fresh, individual way. Whatever patronising (!) comments you may get on this site (from the men - you can trust the ladies!) , you deserve public recognition, and I hope that one of your friends can persuade a publisher to publish your poems. And now, if you have a relative who's computer-expert, you can publish as we have just done here at nil set-up cost, with lulu.com Thank you for your poems, and I look forward to reading more. Best wishes. Michael
