Pretending Poem by Ann Thrope

Pretending

nervous,
but in the good kind of way.
I’m fumbling for words
trying to be something I’m not
trying to be the way I think I should.
this isn't a mutual feeling
but it’s fun to pretend
fun to think it might work.
and maybe I’m not pretending
but it feels like I want to
so I keep on
fumbling for the right words
and trying to show you a different me
how different I can really be
and maybe then you’ll like me
or maybe I’ll just pretend this isn’t happening
